Thank you very much for writing this up; I've come across various references to Coming Out Under Fire, but haven't managed to get my hands on it yet.

Since I assume everyone will immediately google things in this post, and to save you time, This is the Army is available on Google Video, and there is an example of a "Pony Ballet at 1:08:40, but there's also some blackface stuff elsewhere in the movie, so proceed with caution.

It's fascinating that thirty years later, Klinger's pursuit of a section eight is nearly congruent with practice in WWII. I've heard it said that the 40s were more like the 70s than like the 50s, but oddly, that is the part that brought it home to me.
